Legendary actress Olivia de Havilland, the star of the 1939 classic Gone With the Wind, died peacefully in her sleep in Paris, France, on Saturday.
De Havilland, who was 104, played Melanie Hamilton in the movie, who was Scarlett O’Hara’s sister-in-law and later, best friend.
Gone With the Wind has remained a historically remembered Civil War drama, which in recent years has been depicted as a controversial portrayal of the South. HBO Max has begun providing context at the start of the film when it started streaming about its historical accuracy.
De Havilland went on to win two best actress Oscars for her films To Each His Own and The Heiress. She was the last surviving star of the Gone With the Wind.
