At least two U.S. allies do not support President Trump’s desire to readmit Russia to the G-7, a group of the world’s leading economic powers.
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said it would be unacceptable to invite Russia back.
“Its continued disrespect and flaunting of international rules and norms is why it remains outside of the G-7, and it will continue to remain out,” he said Monday. “It will not be acceptable to accept it within the G-7.”
The United Kingdom also said Monday it would not support Trump’s push, though a spokesman for Prime Minister Boris Johnson noted that the summit’s guest list was ultimately up to the host country.
“We would not support it being readmitted as a member of the group unless it ceases aggressive and destabilizing activity that threatens the safety of U.K. citizens and the collective security of our allies,” Johnson’s spokesman said.
The group suspended Russia’s involvement in 2014 after it annexed Crimea in Ukraine.
“We are yet to see evidence of its changed behavior which would justify readmittance,” Johnson’s spokesman said.
Trump proposed expanding the group by adding four nations, including Russia, India, Australia, and South Korea.
