Schumer, Dems calls on Kavanaugh to withdraw after third accusation

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., on Wednesday called on Judge Brett Kavanaugh withdraw from consideration as a Supreme Court nominee after a third accuser went public with allegations that Kavanaugh was in the room when she was raped.

“Republicans need to immediately suspend the proceedings related to Judge Kavanaugh’s nomination, and the president must order the FBI to reopen the background check investigation,” Schumer said in a statement. “There are now multiple, corroborated allegations against Judge Kavanaugh, made under the penalty of perjury, all of which deserve a thorough investigation.”

“I strongly believe Judge Kavanaugh should withdraw from consideration,” Schumer said.

Schumer said if Kavanaugh does not withdraw, Republicans should postpone the hearing for Thursday where Dr. Christine Blasey Ford and Kavanaugh are set to terrify.

“If he will not, at the very least, the hearing and vote should be postponed while the FBI investigates all of these allegations,” he said. “If our Republican colleagues proceed without an investigation, it would be a travesty for the honor of the Supreme Court and our country.”

Schumer was joined by other Senate Democrats who said Kavanaugh should withdraw.

“A Supreme Court nomination is not worth more than the lives of survivors,” said Sen. Cory Booker, D-N.J. “There must be a full investigation of these allegations of criminal behavior, and Judge Kavanaugh’s nomination must be withdrawn.”

Sen. Tammy Duckworth, D-Ill., said Kavanaugh’s alleged behavior is “absolutely horrifying.”

“There must be an immediate FBI investigation into his conduct followed by a Senate hearing in which relevant witnesses like Mark Judge are asked to testify and subpoenaed if necessary,” she said.
