CHINO, Calif. (AP) — Authorities say a fiery three-vehicle crash in Southern California has claimed “multiple lives.”
The crash occurred shortly before 9 p.m. PDT Friday in an unpopulated area of Chino.
Chino police spokeswoman Monica Gutierrez said early Saturday that she “can confirm that there are multiple fatalities.”
But she told The Associated Press more than five hours after the crash that investigators still don’t know how many people were killed because the vehicles were so badly damaged.
When police arrived on the scene, two of the vehicles were engulfed in flames.
She says one person survived and was hospitalized with nonlife-threatening injuries.
KCAL-TV reported that police searched a nearby field for additional victims that may have been ejected.
Gutierrez says more information on the victims is expected from the coroner later in the morning.
Police still haven’t determined a cause.
