Minnelli takes stage in Baltimore

Liza Minnelli still takes regular dance classes, performs around the world and puts her star power to good use.

This weekend, the Oscar, Grammy, Tony, Emmy and Golden Globe winner (to name a few) will visit Charm City to perform for the Chimes Hall of Fame 60th Anniversary. While many of her contemporaries have put their dance shoes in moth balls, Minnelli has signed on to perform at what is arguably one of the biggest charity events of the year.

“I?m thrilled to be back in Baltimore this fall,” said Minnelli. “It?s hard to believe I haven?t performed there since the early 1990s. I?m anxious to be on stage at the Meyerhoff Symphony Hall this weekend performing at this wonderful benefit for Chimes School.”

The event celebrates the community service and philanthropic endeavors of Sen. Francis X. Kelly and the Kelly Family of Kelly & Associates Insurance group. But organizers are also toasting the new school for those with disabilities. Proceeds raised from Minnelli?s performance are earmarked to provide education, athletic equipment and computers there.

“The new Chimes School represents an extraordinary opportunity for Chimes to solidify its future, and the future of generation of students …” said President and Chief Executive Officer Terry Allen Perl in a statement.

“Yes, you always have to move forward. [Legendary dance teacher] Martha Graham taught me that,” Minnelli said in a recent online chat with fans. “You don?t dance at 30 the way you danced at 20. You don?t dance at 40 the way you danced at 30. Because you learn to pull it in and make it more like a laser beam as opposed to a big, bright spotlight. It becomes more specific, clearer, and you have to do less, because it?s stronger. You adjust to the time.”
