Missing California dog reunited with owner 12 years later

They say dogs usually find their way home, but for one Northern California family’s pooch, it took a dozen years.

Zoey went missing in 2010 and was thought to be dead. But earlier this month, an animal services officer near the city of Stockton, California, picked up an old stray dog in poor health. She was scanned for a microchip, and it turned out to be Zoey, the San Joaquin County Sheriff’s Office said on Facebook.

“Honestly, I’m still in shock. Like, I definitely didn’t expect this to ever happen,” said the unidentified owner on a Facebook video. “I’m really excited … to bring her back, get her healthy, and, you know, let her live the rest of her life.”

Zoey had been gone so long that the microchip company had listed her as deceased in 2015. But luckily, the owners continued to have the same phone number. At the time, they lived in a small town 60 miles away from Stockton. The owner drove to Stockton to pick up her dog, and the reunion was videotaped.

“I got her at the pound when she was 6 months with her twin sister … and we brought them home, and they were with us for about six months,” she said. “Then we went to the store for about 20 minutes and came back, and she was missing.”

It’s unclear how Zoey left home. The sheriff’s office said a black SUV had dumped her off at a rural property and sped away.

Zoey’s twin appears to be deceased as the woman said she now has a Labrador retriever who is also 13 and very friendly.
