County park to be rededicated to Olympians

Baltimore County officials plan to rededicate a park off the Towson traffic circle to local Olympians, starting with Michael Phelps.

The swimmer — who won eight gold medals in Beijing, bringing his total to 14 — will be the first Olympian specially honored in the park on York Road, built last year on the former site of a Shell gas station.

Changes will include a new sign and commemorative features for local Olympians, said county spokesman Don Mohler. In addition to Phelps, Towson swimmer Katie Hoff and Paralympian Jessica Long, of Middle River, won medals in Beijing.

Mohler said any costs associated with the project will be raised privately.
