CHALMETTE, La. (AP) — St. Bernard Parish officials have created a department to police code violations.
Nola.comThe Times-Picayune reports (http://bit.ly/YAs9Bf ) staffing will include a hearing officer and an assistant.
The department will be funded by fines assessed against violators.
Parish Councilman Casey Hunnicut says the department will be charged with enforcing codes for public health, housing, fire, environment and historic districts.
Parish President Dave Peralta says the department should help reduce blight in St. Bernard.
