Cristiano Ronaldo will not face rape charges

International soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo will not face sexual assault charges in Las Vegas after being accused of raping a woman in his hotel room a decade ago.

The Clark County District Attorney Steve Wolfson said in a statement that police opened a new investigation into the matter and couldn’t find evidence to prove his accuser’s claim beyond a reasonable doubt.

“Based upon a review of the information presented at this time, the allegations of sexual assault against Cristiano Ronaldo cannot be proven beyond a reasonable doubt. Therefore, no charges will be forthcoming,” the statement read.

Kathryn Mayorga, a 34-year-old former model and schoolteacher, accused Ronaldo of meeting her at a Las Vegas nightclub and inviting her and others up to his penthouse suite. She alleges that Ronaldo, also 34, forced himself on her and raped her while she screamed “no” multiple times.

Ronaldo’s attorney has said that the two had consensual sex in 2009, and that Ronaldo, who currently plays for the Italian soccer club Juventus, did not rape Mayorga.

Mayorga has a lawsuit against Ronaldo in U.S. civil court accusing him of conspiracy, defamation, breach of contract, coercion, and fraud. She claims that she was coerced into signing a settlement and nondisclosure agreement for $375,000 after the 2009 incident and is now looking to void the settlement and agreement. The lawsuit also seeks at least $200,000 more from the Portuguese soccer star.

The investigation, which has now concluded, was reopened in 2018 at the request of Mayorga’s attorneys.
