County executive challenges residents to clean commute

Is there a healthier and more environmentally friendly way to get to work?

That?s the question Howard County Executive Ken Ulman wants residents to ask themselves this month, which he has declared Clean Commute Month.

Ulman wants residents to consider an alternate to driving, such as taking the bus, carpooling, walking or biking, a few days a week.

Ground-level ozone is created when air pollutants react with heat and sunlight, Ulman said. This can create health problems and the increased-ozone season typically starts in May, he said.

Challenge participants will enter into a drawing for prizes, including dinner for two, a spa treatment, a gas card, walking shoes, a bike tuneup or transit passes.
