WATCH: Rashida Tlaib cries while discussing illegal immigrants in federal custody

Rep. Rashida Tlaib became emotional during a press conference where she discussed illegal immigrants in federal custody.

“It’s hard to be up here to tell this story as a mother and as an American,” the Michigan Democrat said, fighting back tears throughout her four-and-a-half minute speech.

Tlaib said that these immigrants were not in U.S. “custody” but “in our care.”

“We can talk about new proposals and legislation, but current law allows them to go through a process for asylum,” she said. “We don’t need new laws; we need morality. We need an administration that understands there are human rights violations happening.”

The freshman congresswoman went on to claim the fight was against President Trump’s administration, which believes in an “ideology” that “others are less than.”

Tlaib was forced to defend a vote against $4.6 billion in emergency funding to provide resources to help migrants at the border. She claimed federal border agents told her money would not solve the problems at the southern border.
