CNN panel: Clinton’s FBI problem looks bad

Federal Bureau of Investigation agents seized Hillary Clinton’s private server this week, and none of it looks good for her, a CNN panel agreed Thursday morning.

Clinton’s camp insists that the former secretary of state is not the “target” of an FBI investigation, explaining that agents are merely reviewing her email habits from when she worked at the State Department. But no one on the CNN panel was buying that spin.

“Yesterday we had Hillary Clinton’s chief spokesperson actually argue that the central core of her argument, and the spin document she put out is Hillary Clinton is not a target in the investigation,” National Journal’s Ron Fournier said Thursday on CNN. “When you argue that technically your candidate is not the target of the investigation, you’re losing.”

The FBI is investigating whether Clinton sent or received classified information over her private, unauthorized email server when she was secretary of state. Clinton’s team released a set of talking points this week arguing that she isn’t technically the “target” of the FBI probe.

That statement isn’t helped by the fact that voters already have trust issues with Clinton, the Associated Press’ Julie Pace said during the panel discussion.

“She’s a weak candidate in the sense that they don’t trust her and don’t think she understands her problems,” Pace said. “Those kind of factors really can be damaging throughout a long campaign.”

Fournier added in reference to Clinton’s greatest weakness: “Trust, trust, trust. If you are Joe Biden and you take a serious look at this, you have to give pause.”

Rumors abound that Vice President Joe Biden is giving serious consideration to throwing his hat in the 2016 ring. The press’ reaction to these whispers has been nearly unanimous: A Biden candidacy would upend Clinton’s “frontrunner” status, possibly knocking her out of the running altogether.
