A car drove into a crowd of protesters on Sunday night in Minneapolis, killing a woman and leaving another person injured, according to police.
The incident occurred at 11:39 p.m. in the city’s Uptown neighborhood, where protests and riots have remained since law enforcement officers with the U.S. Marshalls fatally shot 32-year-old Winston Boogie Smith earlier this month.
The suspect driving the vehicle was pulled out of his car by protesters and was subsequently taken into custody, police said. He was taken to the hospital for injuries he sustained during the crash, though the extent of his injuries has not yet been revealed.
The woman and the other injured person were taken in an ambulance to the hospital, where the woman died.
Police did not immediately identify the driver’s motive, though law enforcement did say drugs or alcohol could have been a contributing factor.
Smith was killed on June 3 after police surrounded him on the top floor of a parking garage at a shopping mall. Law enforcement said he fired a gun from his vehicle as officers sought to arrest him on a warrant, the Star Tribune reported.
The unrest in the city has caused at least one local business in the Uptown neighborhood to close.

“It has become more and more evident that Uptown continues to struggle with store closings, social unrest, crime and street closures,” Juut Salon Spa wrote on Facebook on Sunday. “We would be heartbroken if anything were to happen to our team members or clients. With that at the forefront, we made this difficult decision.”
