PHILADELPHIA — Jimmy Carter ripped Donald Trump in a video address to Democratic delegates Tuesday night by claiming the Republican presidential nominee has “violated some of the most important moral and ethical principles on which our nation was founded.”
The 39th president predicted this election will affect Americans “for generations” and praised Hillary Clinton as the ideal candidate to be competing against Trump.
“At a moment when it’s become more important than ever to build people up, to have hope and a road map … we’ve seen a Republican presidential candidate who seems to have violated some of the most important moral and ethical principles on which our nation was founded,” Carter told delegates. “Fortunately, the Democratic nominee we have chosen offers a stark contrast in substance and style, but also competence and experience to what the Republicans have chosen.
“These are perilous times,” he continued. “We need someone with a strong heart, a deep understanding of the issues, challenges and opportunities, and a steady hand.”
Carter congratulated both Clinton and Bernie Sanders, whose supporters were off protesting in a nearby media tent when the former president’s video was played.
“Bernie Sanders and Secretary Clinton comported themselves with dignity, talked about issues that matter and presented a vision for our nation,” Carter said, giving thanks to Sanders “for energizing young people and bringing so many young people into the electoral process.”
Carter was introduced by his grandson, Jason, who addressed delegates shortly after the second night of the Democratic National Convention began.
