Miami orders companies to remove scooters from streets before Hurricane Dorian turns them into dangerous projectiles

The city of Miami has told companies that rent out electric scooters to pull them off the streets to prevent them from becoming flying projectiles during Hurricane Dorian.

City officials told Uber, Jump, Lyft, Bird, Bolt, Lime, and Spin to store their fleets until the storm passes. Miami City Commission Chairman Ken Russell tweeted that “all” scooters would be removed from the streets, dubbing the potential hazard “#scooternado.”

Some of the companies said they’ve also paused operations or reduced their fleets in Fort Lauderdale, Orlando, and Tampa.

A Lime representative said it has about 1,500 scooters and 500 bikes in those markets that it’s pulling off the streets. A spokeswoman for Lyft said it has 244 scooters in Miami and will store them in a warehouse until the storm passes.

Hurricane Dorian intensified to a Category 3 storm by midday Friday and is gaining strength as it moves toward Florida. The hurricane is expected to hit Florida’s east coast this weekend.
