House candidates state views on Va. marriage amendment

Candidates for the 11th District House of Representatives seat weighed in on Virginia’s proposed marriage amendment Tuesday night, demonstrating yet another ideological split between the two polarized opponents.

Incumbent Tom Davis, a well-financed Republican heavily favored by political analysts to hold on to his seat, came down on the side of the GOP-led Virginia General Assembly. The state Legislature has placed a constitutional same-sex marriage ban on the November ballot.

Davis told the crowd that marriage should be “between a man and a woman.” Democrat Andrew Hurst, his opponent, responded by denouncing the referendum.

“My marriage is not threatened by other people wanting to have aspects of a marriage,” he said, later adding that the Virginia Bill of Rights “should not be a tool to take away rights of our citizens.”

Virginia voters will decide on the marriage amendment, as well as who will take the 11th district seat, on Nov. 7.
