New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo extended the moratorium on evictions for not paying rent to late August.
Cuomo issued an executive order on March 20, banning coronavirus-related evictions through June. The extension bans evictions through Aug. 20.
The Democratic governor said late-payment fees are also banned, and renters will be allowed to use their security deposits as payment, and the deposits could be repaid over time.
“I hope it gives families a deep breath. Nothing can happen until Aug. 20. And then we’ll figure out between now and Aug. 20 what the situation is,” he said during his daily news conference.
Unemployment has skyrocketed during the pandemic, with state and city officials ordering businesses to close temporarily and residents to practice social distancing.
