The D.C. Council has approved a bill that would make assisted suicide legal about a week after Colorado voters adopted a similar measure.

The bill now goes before District of Columbia Mayor Muriel Bowser, who has said she will not veto it. It was passed by an 11-2 margin during a legislative meeting on Tuesday.

The bill would enable anyone 18 years old and above who live in the nation’s capitol can apply to get medication to end their life if they have six months or less to live.

Several other states have put in place assisted suicide laws, the latest being Colorado last week. In October 2015, California adopted a similar law.

While the law could be passed, it would still need to be approved by Congress.
