United Kingdom Prime Minister Theresa May said Wednesday she is ready to resign.
“I am prepared to leave this job earlier than I intended in order to secure a smooth and orderly Brexit,” May told a group of Conservative members of Parliament.
“I have heard very clearly the mood of the parliamentary party. I know there is a desire for a new approach — and new leadership — in the second phase of the Brexit negotiations — and I won’t stand in the way of that,” she added, not provided a specific date for a departure.
Pressure on the prime minister has been mounting over the last several weeks as her coalition has been unable twice to deliver a Brexit deal that would clear the House of Commons.
May, who previously served as the U.K. home secretary, could become the second British prime minister to fall under the weight of Brexit. She succeeded Prime Minister David Cameron in the summer of 2016. Cameron, who supported the “Remain” campaign in the 2016 referendum, stepped down after voters resoundingly voted for leave the European Union.
