I’m ‘basically’ an immigrant: Kate Winslet boasts that her ancestors were poor

English actress Kate Winslet praised her “slave” heritage in an interview, saying she would be “disgusted” to be have wealthy or royalty as ancestors.

Winslet said in an interview with the Telegraph on Tuesday that her “roots are socialist, working class and, in a funny way, my parents frowned upon the wealthy.”

She said that she “would have been upset and disgusted if I had come from wealth or royalty.”

Winslet noted that her great-great-grandfather immigrated to the U.K. from Sweden, which “basically means I’m an immigrant.”

The Titanic actress said her great-great-great-great-grandfather was a “slave” who died in prison after being caught for stealing potatoes and honey to feed his family. She explained that she wanted her kids to learn from her poor ancestors.

“I come from a long line of impoverished people on both sides of my family, which perhaps explains why I’ve tried to instil my parents’ values into my kids,” she said. “People never believe me, but my children aren’t over-privileged. We just don’t live like that. They are very balanced. Humble.”
