The Republican plan for replacing the Affordable Care Act would take away healthcare coverage from millions of people, an analysis of the plan given to state governors shows.
Bloomberg reported Saturday that governors meeting in Washington were presented with an outline of the effects of healthcare policies supported by GOP lawmakers trying to replace President Obama’s signature law.
The outline showed the number of people receiving coverage through Obamacare would drop as much as 51 percent in states that didn’t expand Medicaid coverage and 30 percent in those that did.
According to the report, two consulting firms made the presentation to the governors.
Approximately 12 million people gained healthcare coverage from expanded Medicaid programs in the states following the passage of Obamacare. About 20 million people who didn’t have coverage before the law passed now do.
President Trump has promised to repeal and replace Obamacare with “something better” and has said he wants to provide “insurance for everybody.”
Some Republican governors had harsh words for the plan following the meeting.
“To me, it’s not acceptable,” Ohio Gov. John Kasich told Bloomberg.
“Governors know about 50 times more about Medicaid than anyone in Congress,” said Haley Barbour, former Republican governor of Mississippi. “The idea that we’re going to repeal, repair, replace, redundant, whatever — the idea that we’re going to do that in a matter of weeks just ignores the difficulty of doing it.”
