Key witness in former Dallas police officer’s murder trial fatally shot

A man who was a key witness in the murder trial of former Dallas police officer Amber Guyger was fatally shot on Friday night, according to an attorney familiar with the case.

Joshua Brown was a neighbor of shooting victim Botham Jean, who was sitting in his apartment when Guyger entered and shot him to death in September 2018. Lee Merritt, an attorney for Jean’s family, spoke with Brown’s mother, who confirmed her son’s death.

Dallas police responded to an incident at Brown’s apartment complex on Friday night around 10:30 p.m. They located him lying on the parking lot ground suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was then taken to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

Witnesses told authorities that they heard several gunshots before seeing a silver, four-door sedan speed out of the parking lot. Police indicated that there is no information on a suspect at this time.

According to Merritt, Brown lived in fear of becoming a victim of gun violence, pointing to his emotional testimony earlier in the week, during which he cried and wiped away tears with his shirt.

“He said it could have been him,” Merritt said.

31-year-old Guyger, who claimed she entered Jean’s apartment by mistake and thought he was an intruder in her home, was found guilty of murder on Tuesday. She was later sentenced to 10 years in prison.
