Delegation OKs vote on police force

Carroll voters would decide the fate of a hotly contested countywide police force under a measure being drafted by the county?s State House delegation.

The delegation measure, which would need General Assembly approval, would make moot the county commissioners? vote to move to a countywide force. Commissioners had planned to scale back the role of the sheriff?s office and eliminate Maryland?s last Resident Trooper program, in which state police help patrol the county.

County Sheriff Kenneth Tregoning opposed the move to the countywide force and noted the commissioners board had conducted no public hearing before its decision.

Outraged voters also complained they?ve been excluded from Carroll commissioners? decision to transition to the countywide police department.
