Trump backs off proposed ‘cyber security unit’ he discussed with Putin

President Trump nixed the idea of a “cyber security unit” between the Americans and Russians after tweeting about the idea Sunday during an early morning musing.

Earlier on Sunday, during a series of tweets recapping his trip to Hamburg, Germany and the G-20, Trump said he and Putin discussed forming a “impenetrable Cyber Security unit so that election hacking, & many other negative things, will be guarded.”

That idea was met with derision from Republican lawmakers and Democrats alike. On Sunday evening, Trump backed off the idea.

“The fact that President Putin and I discussed a Cyber Security unit doesn’t mean I think it can happen. It can’t-but a ceasefire can,& did!” Trump tweeted.

Trump and Putin did come together to help negotiate a ceasefire in southern Syria that took effect on Sunday. Trump touted that ceasefire multiple times on Sunday, but those agreements have been notoriously brief in the past.
