Living Your Yoga: Turn lower back pain, holiday stress away with reclined twist

Welcome to our final week dedicated to living your yoga. Wow, it goes by so quickly. We’ve explored three types of twists so far and the eight-fold path of yoga with a focus on the dos and don’ts. Our finale includes one of the most luxurious twists out there: reclined twist. As with all the other twists, they are best done on an empty stomach and are amazing at releasing your lower back while detoxifying your system. Without further ado, let’s twist!

Come down to the floor, rest on your back and draw your knees into your chest. Gently rock from side to side to massage your lower back. After a minute or so here, return to the center and extend your arms out to the side in a “T” position. Lower your knees over to the right and turn your head to the left. Take five to 10 deep breaths here. Yum! This pose can work magic on a tired body. Now draw your knees back to the center and lower your knees to the left as you turn your head to the right. Take five to 10 breaths here and feel free to continue back and forth. Wash, rinse and repeat!

To intensify the twist, cross your top knee over the bottom knee or extend your top leg straight out and reach for it with your opposite arm. Ahhh. Don’t forget to repeat on the other side for the same amount of time.

Yoga, which means union, is relevant for all beings wanting to live more harmoniously with themselves and those around them. We’ll end this series the same way we end a yoga class — “Namaste.” This means I salute the beauty within you from the beauty within me.
