A new poll released Thursday spells further trouble for former President Donald Trump in his attempt to take back the Oval Office.
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R) leads Trump by 5% in the most recent poll, with DeSantis receiving 47% against the former president’s 42%. The update marks a reversal from two months ago, when 45% of respondents who are registered voters said they wanted Trump as the 2024 GOP nominee against DeSantis’s 36%, according to a Yahoo News-YouGov poll.
A total of 1,635 adults in the United States were interviewed online from Dec. 1 through Dec. 5. The survey had a margin of error of approximately 2.6%.
VOTERS DON’T WANT A REPEAT OF THE 2020 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION
The results of the poll come after the Republican Party experienced disappointing results in the 2022 midterm elections, with many Trump-endorsed candidates losing their elections to Democratic opponents. DeSantis, on the other hand, experienced a massive victory in his reelection bid for Florida governor against Democrat Charlie Crist.
Trump is currently the only candidate to announce that he is running in the 2024 presidential election, announcing his run only a week after the midterm elections. DeSantis has not made any announcement about 2024 but is seen by many within the Republican Party as a strong presidential contender.

President Joe Biden, who defeated Trump in the 2020 election, has not yet announced if he will run for reelection. At the end of the speech he made on Nov. 30, a person in the crowd shouted, “Four more years!” to which Biden responded, “I don’t know about that.”
