Ted Cruz’s Democratic challenger is forcing the Republican Party to divert resources from other GOP candidates to save the senator’s Texas seat, his former campaign spokesman said Monday.
Beto O’Rourke and Cruz are in a tight race in what should have been an easy win for Cruz in the red state.
“I think you got a candidate, Beto O’Rourke, who’s just been a very interesting candidate and has run a tremendous campaign. And he’s raised a ton of money,” Rick Tyler told MSNBC. “He’s electrified the Left.”
“This is anywhere between zero percentage points and 4 points … It shouldn’t be. It should be a 10, 12, 15-point race,” he continued.

Tyler said the diversion of money to save Cruz’s seat by Club for Growth, Americans for Prosperity, and the Koch network will stymie Republican candidates in other states.
A RealClearPolitics average of polls show Cruz had a 4.4-point lead over O’Rourke.
President Trump announced in a tweet last month he was heading to Texas in October to campaign for Cruz.
