An Alaskan healthcare worker suffered what is being called an “allergic reaction” to the new COVID-19 vaccine within 10 minutes of being given the dose.
The worker, who has only been identified as a middle-aged woman, is doing “well,” according to a Fox News report. She suffered an adverse reaction to the first dose of Pfizer’s two-dose vaccine and is still under supervision in the foyer of the hospital.
The woman is said to have suffered anaphylactic reactions that will require hospitalization and monitoring. Although her symptoms were resolved shortly after the onset with the help of epinephrine, she will not be receiving a second dose of the vaccine.
Alaskan health officials said they were not changing their plans to distribute the vaccine after the woman’s reaction.
Similar reactions were recorded in the United Kingdom, where the vaccine was approved shortly before U.S. authorization, in two incidents. Officials said this is the first reaction of this type in the United States.
The woman was said to be excited to receive the vaccine but will now not be released from hospital care until Wednesday after the adverse reaction.
