Two Baltimore County schools among best in country

Two Baltimore County high schools were recognized by U.S. News & World Report magazine for being among the best in the country.

Eastern Technical High School in Essex earned a silver medal, and Western School of Technology and Environmental Science in Catonsville earned a bronze. The top 100 high schools received gold medals, the next 504 received silvers and another 1,321 were given bronzes.

The ranks were based on students’ scores on standardized tests and their preparation for college, and the magazine evaluated more than 21,000 public high schools in 48 states using data from the 2006-2007 school year.

Eastern received a silver last year, but Western was not included on the list until this year.

In addition, Eastern was one of 10 Baltimore County schools included in Newsweek magazine’s list in May for the top 5 percent of high schools in the nation.

The issue of U.S. News & World Report is due out Dec. 15.
