Anaheim, Calif., is home to Disneyland, the Los Angeles Angels and, now, violent anti-Trump protests.
Donald Trump held a rally Wednesday in the California city in the run-up to the Republican primary on June 7. It was dogged by progressive protesters who traded chants with Trump supporters.
Throughout the day, police tried hard to keep the two groups from coming to blows. At one point they had to wade into a Trump, anti-Trump shoving match to break it up.
Many pro-Trump folks asked if the often bandanna-sporting protesters were “illegals.” A group of about five of them were escorted away, peacefully, “in the interest of public safety,” said Anaheim Police Department spokesman Sgt. Daron Wyatt.
A few people protesters were ejected from the Trump rally but not arrested.
The real action came after Trump had departed. A rump of anti-Trumpers stuck around, ignoring police calls to disburse and getting more worked up as the hours wore on. They set a garbage can on fire and a few may have urinated publicly.
Police made several arrests when the anti-Trump protesters started throwing rocks and other objects at the cops. “You can’t arrest all of us!” one woman shouted according to the Los Angeles Times. Other protesters stuck around for a bit, yelling, “Mexico! Mexico!” before police pushed them out.
According to Anaheim PD, the total number of people arrested came to eight: seven adults and one juvenile.
