Simone Biles to compete in balance beam final

Simone Biles will compete on Tuesday in the balance beam final, her first Tokyo Olympics event since removing herself from multiple competitions for mental health-related reasons.

“We are so excited to confirm that you will see two U.S. athletes in the balance beam final tomorrow — Suni Lee AND Simone Biles!! Can’t wait to watch you both!” USA Gymnastics wrote in a Monday statement.

The 24-year-old Olympic gymnastics champion withdrew from the team final on July 27 after she stumbled when landing during a vault. She later said at a press conference that she did not feel mentally conditioned leading up to the event.

“I was just, like, shaking, could barely nap. I just never felt like this going into a competition before, and I tried to go out here and have fun,” Biles said.

Biles later backed out of the individual all-around competition on July 28 to focus on her mental health, a decision that was “wholeheartedly” supported by USA Gymnastics, according to a statement.

The six-time Olympic medalist explained her decision to back out was due to suffering with “the twisties,” a condition in which she “literally cannot tell up from down,” the gymnast said Friday.

The balance beam competition will be the only chance for Biles to win an individual Olympic medal at the Games this year.
