Congressional veterans push Biden for Global War on Terrorism Memorial in Washington

A group of 25 military veterans serving in Congress requested a meeting with President Joe Biden on Monday, seeking help in finding a location for a memorial for service members who died fighting terrorism.

The bipartisan group of lawmakers, who comprise the For Country Caucus, are seeking to move forward with the Global War on Terrorism War Memorial Act, which was signed by the former administration and authorizes a memorial on federal land in Washington, D.C., but does not provide a specific location.

“We strongly believe that White House leadership indicating your support of honoring our [Global War on Terrorism] veterans with a memorial on The National Reserve would ensure this legislation’s prompt passage into law,” veterans in the caucus wrote in a letter to Biden, according to a copy obtained by Fox News.

Former President Donald Trump‘s signing of the act established the Global War on Terrorism Memorial and a foundation to oversee the funding and construction of the project. The lawmakers who signed the letter say the final step needed to construct the memorial on the National Mall is the passage and enactment of the Global War on Terrorism Memorial Location Act.

The letter sent to Biden comes as the United States has completed more than 90% of its duties related to withdrawal from Afghanistan after the president said earlier this year that all forces would be diminished by the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001.

“As the United States withdraws troops from Afghanistan, it is more urgent than ever that we offer our nation’s veterans, servicemembers, and their families a place to heal and reflect,” the letter added. “It is equally important that we offer Americans a place to better understand the multiple generations of service members who have served our country during this conflict.”

The letter was backed by several nonprofit organizations, including the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars, and also had signatures from Democratic Rep. Jason Crow, who served as a Marine, and Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger, who served in the Air Force.
