The archbishop of Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi’s diocese advocated that Catholic public figures who support abortion can be banned from receiving communion.
“Our responsibility to the rest of the Catholic community is to assure them that the Church of Jesus Christ does take most seriously her mission to care for ‘the least of these,’ as Our Lord has commanded us, and to correct Catholics who erroneously, and sometimes stubbornly, promote abortion,” Archbishop Salvatore Cordileone of San Francisco wrote in a letter Saturday.
“This correction takes several forms and rightly begins with private conversations between the erring Catholic and his or her parish priest or bishop,” he continued. “Because we are dealing with public figures and public examples of cooperation in moral evil, this correction can also take the public form of exclusion from the reception of Holy Communion.”
Pelosi, who resides in Cordileone’s archdiocese in San Francisco, and President Joe Biden both promote abortion despite being Catholic. The church explicitly opposes all forms of abortion, viewing it as murder.
CATHOLICS RIP BIDEN: ‘100 DAYS OF DISAPPOINTMENT’
Pelosi has previously argued that her Catholic faith “shouldn’t have an impact on a woman’s right to choose.”
Other Catholics have called on the church to deny allowing public figures from receiving the Holy Sacrament if they advocate for abortion, with some saying the matter is in the clergy’s hands.
“But I will say, it is really problematic when you have a Catholic — the most prominent Catholic in the country, which is what President Biden is — taking this stand that he is in favor of abortion — which the church says is a grave moral evil; it’s the killing of defenseless, unborn, vulnerable human life — and then presenting himself for Communion,” Mary Hasson, a fellow at the conservative-leaning Ethics and Public Policy Center, said.
Cordileone’s letter comes after the Washington Post was slammed by conservatives and Catholics for describing Biden as “a very Catholic president” while calling Catholic bishops who follow the church’s teachings on abortion as “right-wing.”
“Supporting the killing of unborn children makes you ‘very Catholic’ to the Jeff Bezos propaganda outlet while supporting the consistent Catholic teaching on it makes you a ‘right-wing’ Catholic. Clown clown clown show over there,” the Federalist’s Mollie Hemingway tweeted in response to the Washington Post story.

Biden is “very” Catholic but Catholics who are pro-life are right wingers. Our media is garbage.

Cordileone has also previously criticized Pelosi’s stance on abortion, saying, “No Catholic in good conscience can favor abortion.”

“Our land is soaked with the blood of the innocent, and it must stop,” he added at the time.
Pelosi’s office did not immediately return the Washington Examiner’s request for comment on Cordileone’s letter.
