THE WEEKLY STANDARD will, of course, be chronicling the ups and downs, the maneuvers and gyrations, of the Republican VP possibilities in the coming months. This week, we note a particularly striking invitation from one hopeful, California attorney general Dan Lungren — striking because it seeks to present Lungren to prominent Washingtonians while avoiding the usual subterfuges of having others do the introducing, or doing so in the context of raising money for other politicians or charity.
“Dan and Bobbi Lungren invite you to join us for an “Evening with Friends” Reception — Friday, April 26, 1996, 6:30 p.m., Capitol Hill Club.”
That’s it. No “friends” are named, no charitable or political purpose stated; just come and meet the Lungrens. We wonder whether Powell, Engler, Voinovich, Campbell, and Ashcroft are among the invited.
