MontCo’s immigration policy is real budget buster As a recently retired Montgomery County police officer, I am insulted by accusations made by local politicians, who point their budget-busting finger at the unions that represent the dedicated employees of this county.
No one from County Executive Ike Leggett on down has seriously addressed the No. 1 problem: An ever-increasing illegal alien population that is rapidly depleting our tax dollars by an estimated $234 million annually. Leggett’s and the council’s policies have caused a huge influx of residents without “legal presence” here.
While they can no longer get a driver’s license, there are no restrictions on enrolling their children in our schools, qualifying for in-county tuition at our colleges, or obtaining free non-emergency medical, housing, food, energy assistance, job training, and more. Yes, there is a free lunch in Montgomery County.
When arrested for drunken driving or other serious offenses, many do not show up in court. Because of Leggett’s refusal to fully cooperate with federal immigration agents, thousands of offenders become fugitives in our community. Police officers are limited in doing their best to protect the community. The problem is so bad that numerous illegal aliens are living in virtual shantytowns in Rock Creek Park, safe from police prosecution. The park has been trashed.
Don’t blame our county work force for budget deficits. Why should dedicated county employees and taxpayers suffer because of the county’s ineffective approach to illegal immigration?

Constitutional protection applies to all Re: “The ever-shrinking Constitution,” April 1
Perhaps Gregory Kane should actually read the decision in Roe v. Wade before claiming it was written to grant a constitutional right to an abortion. In fact, it was written to protect doctors’ rights to provide the care they felt was most appropriate for their patients without government interference.
Interestingly, the idea of keeping bureaucrats out of the doctor-patient relationship was one of the primary Republican arguments against the health care reform bill.
Secondly, Mr. Kane should read the 14th Amendment before disparaging the Mississippi decision concerning a young girl and her prom date. The amendment clearly states that “No state shall … deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws.” Whether she wanted to bring a man or a woman to the prom, as far as the law is concerned, they are both people deserving of equal protection.

Time to dump Congress and start over Re: “Ten inconvenient truths about Obamacare,” March 23
Just like in “Atlas Shrugged,” our most productive citizens are quitting. Now that Obamacare has passed, a survey by the New England Journal of Medicine shows that up to 46 percent of physicians may quit or retire early, leaving a huge shortage.
If I were a doctor, I’d sooner flip hamburgers at McDonald’s than kowtow to this socialist health care scheme.
This administration has squandered trillions of dollars taking over banks, auto companies and health care. It will cost jobs, bankrupt America, and devastate the freedom that once made our nation great.
In 1776, Samuel Adams said, “If ever a time should come, when vain and aspiring men shall possess the highest seats in Government, our country will stand in need of its experienced patriots to prevent its ruin.” That time is now. Let’s dump these “vain and aspiring men” and elect statesmen who respect our Constitution and free enterprise.
