Police found Gov. Martin O’Malley’s 18-year-old daughter lying unconscious on a sidewalk at the Inner Harbor Thursday evening, after a graduation party.
Tara O’Malley, a high school senior, traveled to the Inner Harbor Thursday after a party in Towson.
Baltimore police officer Steve Cabral found O’Malley, who “appeared to be unconscious,” on the 700 block of Light Street around 7:30 p.m, according to the police report.
“It looked like she went down hard,” Cabral told The Washington Examiner. “It didn’t look like she had just laid down.”
He said O’Malley was unresponsive when he tried to ask her whether she had been drinking.
“I couldn’t ask her,” he said. “She couldn’t talk.”
Cabral said he would “get in trouble” if he answered further questions about whether alcohol was involved.
He said several friends were with O’Malley when he found her. The officer did not apprehend the friends or ask them where they had been.
He called an ambulance, and responders determined O’Malley’s condition was “non-life threatening and stable,” according to the report. The ambulance transported her to nearby Harbor Hospital for treatment, and released her a short time later.
First lady Katie O’Malley issued a statement Friday confirming “Tara became ill … after attending a graduation celebration [Thursday] night.”
She said her daughter returned home and “is feeling much better.”
“As we deal with this family matter and treat it as a teachable moment, we thank the public for respecting our privacy and encourage all parents and teenagers to be safe this graduation season.”
Tara is the second-oldest of O’Malley’s four children.
The governor is running for reelection against former governor Bob Ehrlich. O’Malley did not initially respond to press inquiries about his daughter’s hospitalization. His spokesman, Shaun Adamec, confirmed her hospital visit Thursday evening and called it “a private, family matter.”
