Singer John Lennon was shot and killed by Mark David Chapman outside the former Beatle’s apartment building in New York City.

As Lennon lay bleeding in the arms of his wife, Yoko Ono, Chapman waited calmly for police, reading a copy of “The Catcher in the Rye.”
