Fewer Young Criminals Leads to ‘Horrific’ Need to Lay Off Teachers of Young Criminals

Behold, the mindset of government officials who would perpetuate social ills to perpetuate their own funding. This is why government programs never die.

In Oregon, two youth correctional facilities are facing lay-offs of 10 teachers (about a third of the staff) due to the fact that “student enrollment at the facilities is less than anticipated.”

The two facilities take in parole violators, junkies for rehab, and violent offenders. One of the facilities was home to famous school shooter Kip Kinkel, who murdered his parents and two classmates. It would seem to be good news for Oregon that there are fewer young men between 12 and 25 who need such services at a government-run youth correctional facility, but that’s not how the government administrator of the detention centers feels about it.

“Even though this is horrific, we will continue to provide the best services that we can,” Hanson said.

“Horrific” that there are fewer young criminals and, therefore, less need for teachers for criminals. But, don’t worry. I’m sure he’s doing all he can to make sure the cash cows (I mean, young men) he has left are rehabilitated promptly.

Only a bureaucrat mourning his lost tax dollars could talk like this.

H/t Don Boudreaux.
