Iowa is just first stop in GOP nomination process Re: “Romney, Santorum in Iowa photo finish, Paul 3rd,” Jan. 4
Iowa does not select the Republican presidential candidate. It is just the first stop in a long road to the White House. Any one of the three strong finishers in Tuesday’s caucuses (Mitt Romney, Rick Santorum and Ron Paul) are still well-positioned for the final lap.
The election is still almost a year away and there are many more hurdles to jump before the winner reaches the finish line. But it looks like Santorum and Paul are the ones to put your money on in this race.
Either candidate can beat President Obama by5 percent, and together they can beat him by 12 percent.
I’m fine with either one at the top of the ticket. Go Santorum! Go Paul!

Iowans proved that every vote counts
After a year of nonstop campaigning, more than 900 public events, and millions of dollars spent on advertising, bus tours and pizza, 122,255 GOP voters in Iowa reaffirmed one of democracy’s greatest strengths:Every votes count.
Just ask Mitt Romney. He squeaked out an eight-vote victory over Rick Santorum, the closest-ever presidential race in the Hawkeye State’s rich caucus history. I’m confident the pundits will have plenty to say about the results, but I doubt any of them will call the former Massachusetts governor the “Landslide Kid.”
Despite the many challenges we face here at home and around the world, the good people of Iowa did their civic duty Tuesday night. Every American, regardless of party affiliation, is the beneficiary of their citizen activism.
Job well done.

New Year’s resolution: Stop the envy party
Re: “New Air Jordans cause nationwide shopping frenzy,” Dec. 23
Last month, President Obama gave a speech deeply rooted in class war ideology during an appearance in Kansas. The Occupy movements largely organized by Big Labor have tried to pit the so-called 99 percent against the wealthier 1 percent. Democrats in Congress repeatedly call for increased taxes on “upper income earners,” despite voting for an extension of the Bush tax cuts just one year ago.
Given this rhetoric, should the conduct of shoppers pushing, shoving and fighting over the new Air Jordan sneakers surprise us?It goes hand in hand with the mentality the politicalLeft fosters and exploits. We can talk about Nike’s irresponsible approach to releasing the sneakers, but individuals are still responsible for their behavior.
Like Greece, these shopping frenzies serve as a mere preview of what’s to come as an unrestrained sense of entitlement pervades our society. Our nation will not emerge from the ongoing recession by lookingto politicians to solve our problems for us through government programs.
Let’s make a change in our thinking a nationwide resolution for 2012: Instead of holding animosity towards those who have more, let us seek solutions within ourselves.
