A woman has been sentenced to nearly five years in prison for stealing more than a half-million dollars from an elderly couple she cared for.
Denise Southerland, 46, worked as a caretaker for an elderly couple in Bealeton, Va. Between September 2005 and March 2007, she stole $571,811 from the couple by writing checks from their accounts to herself, transfering funds from their bank accounts to her own and other means, according to prosecutors.
Southerland, also of Bealeton, was sentenced Friday in federal court in Alexandria to serve four years and nine months behind bars. She was also ordered to pay full restitution to the couple.
She pleaded guilty to bank fraud in December.
