Former Rep. Beto O’Rourke took to Facebook in a livestream to discuss life near the border.
The Texas Democrat’s broadcast followed President Trump’s address from the Oval Office in which Trump highlighted border security and made the case that illegal immigration is dangerous, both for the migrants and for Americans.
O’Rourke, who appeared in conversation in his hometown of El Paso with others, including his wife Amy, said they were about a 20-minute walk from the bridge to Juarez across the Mexican border.
“We’re literally on the border. You don’t have a wall or fence around your house … most of the homes in this neighborhood don’t have fences,” said O’Rourke, who was defeated for a Senate seat by Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, in a hard-fought campaign. O’Rourke is one of the Democrats weighing a run for the presidency in 2020.
“One of the safest cities in America. This neighborhood is safe,” he said.
