D.C. U.S. Attorney says public officials need to be kept in check

The U.S. Attorney for D.C. says it’s important to hold public officials in check to maintain confidence in the government.

Ron Machen was on WTOP’s “The Politics Program” with Mark Plotkin Friday morning. Machen wouldn’t comment on the investigations into top D.C. officials, including Mayor Vince Gray and Ward 5 Councilman Harry Thomas. But Machen did comment generally on the importance of public corruption investigations.

“It’s important that everyone understand nobody is above the law, and public officials have to be held to a higher standard,” Machen said. “I think it hurts the credibility of the government, and people lose confidence.”
