Arlington approves $800,000 for sewage plant landscaping

The Arlington County Board approved a $800,000 contract for landscaping around its Water Pollution Control Plant this weekend.

The plant, which serves Arlington and parts of Alexandria and Fairfax, has been undergoing $568 million worth of renovations to increase its water capacity and reduce pollution. The landscaping is intended to transform the plant from construction eyesore to flowery neighbor.

The landscaping includes eco-friendly improvements such as a permeable walkway, to help reduce runoff.

The contract comes five years after Arlington canned plans for an art park at the sewage site in 2006. The county spent $646,000 in artist fees before discarding the park idea.
