Biden shuts himself down during civil rights discussion: ‘My time’s up’

Joe Biden stopped speaking midsentence as he defended his record on civil rights, telling himself his allotted time for a response was up.

“I supported the [Equal Rights Amendment] from the very beginning. I’m the guy that extended the Voting Rights Act for 25 years. We got to the place where we got 98 out of 98 votes in the United States Senate doing it. I’ve also argued very strongly that we in fact deal with the notion of denying people access to the ballot box. I agreed that everybody once they — anyway, my time’s up. I’m sorry,” he said.

The clash with Sen. Kamala Harris was one of several instances Biden found himself on the defense during the second night of the Democratic primary debates.

Earlier in the debate, California Rep. Eric Swalwell told Biden it was past time for him to pass the torch to a younger generation of leaders.
