Rubio: Americans don’t mind Melania Trump’s plagiarism

Florida Sen. Marco Rubio said Tuesday that U.S. voters aren’t interested in the media and pundits’ obsession with the alleged plagiarism in Melania Trump’s speech on Monday.

“I think for the vast majority of Americans it doesn’t really matter one way or another,” Rubio told CNN host Jake Tapper in Cleveland Tuesday afternoon. “I think they got a chance to meet her last night and hear from her and hear her story, a story a lot of Americans haven’t really heard before. I think that’s what is really gonna matter to voters, probably not to the political punditry class, but to voters.”

The unsuccessful 2016 GOP candidate excused Mrs. Trump for her alleged plagiarism of first lady Michelle Obama’s 2008 convention speech. Rubio defended Mrs. Trump, explaining she was likely not even the person who wrote the speech, much less the one voters are considering to elect.

“Suffice it to say she’s not a candidate. She’s not running for president. She’s not a public officer holder,” Rubio said. “As long as it truly reflected how she felt I think that’s what really matters.”

Rubio also praised the former European model and businesswoman for her delivery last night.

“She did a very good job in a very difficult circumstance,” Rubio said.
