A 20-year-old tried to kill himself by jumping in front of a Metro train Sunday afternoon, but he suffered injuries so minor that he was able to jump back onto the Metro platform after getting hit.
The Yellow Line train was leaving the Huntington station around 4 p.m. when the man leapt from the platform into the path of the train, said Metro spokesman Dan Stessel. The jump was intentional, Stessel said.
But because the train was just leaving the station, he said, it was going slowly enough that the man was not seriously hurt when the train hit him.
The man jumped back onto the platform after he was hit, Stessel said, then tried to leave the station. Authorities stopped him and he was taken to a local hospital to be treated for minor injuries, Stessel said.
He was the 25th person to try to kill himself on the rail system since January 2009 and the eighth so far this year, according to Metro figures. Metro is currently training station managers and train operators on how to intervene with suicidal riders and plans a public outreach campaign of posting signs in stations on where to get help.
