DC test scores to be revealed to everyone – including the mayor – Friday

Scores from the latest round of standardized testing in the District’s public schools will be released at briefing on Friday, Mayor Vincent Gray said.

But don’t ask the mayor if DC Comprehensive Assessment System scores went up or down or did a few corkscrews through the Bermuda Triangle before landing safely in Saigon – because he doesn’t know.

“I haven’t seen the results yet, to be honest with you,” Gray told reporters on Wednesday. He went on to say he hasn’t seen “one document associated with this, and I haven’t had a briefing on this either.”

Gray’s public schedule, released daily by his staff, reflected that DC CAS results would be announced at Gray’s weekly press briefing on Wednesday.

But a call to the Office of the State Superintendent for Education revealed that Gray would only be announcing a Friday briefing on the scores. Reporters and “key education, student and parent leaders” will learn of the results at the Child Advocacy Center on O Street Northwest.

A Friday briefing looked like a news-dump. And it quacked like a news-dump. But Gray protested that Friday was merely the day most convenient for D.C. Superintendent Hosanna Mahaley.

“Is there a day in Washington, D.C., that’s less reported than others?” Gray said. “I haven’t seen that. Saturday, okay.”
