GOP lawmaker attended gay son’s wedding three days after voting against same-sex marriage

A representative from Pennsylvania who voted against legislation codifying same-sex marriage attended the wedding of his son, who was marrying another man, three days after the vote.

Rep. Glenn Thompson’s son told NBC News he “married the love of [his] life” on Friday and confirmed his “father was there.” The Republican congressman voted against the Respect for Marriage Act on July 19.

The “Congressman and Mrs. Thompson were thrilled to attend and celebrate their son’s marriage on Friday night as he began this new chapter in his life,” Thompson’s press secretary, Maddison Stone, told the Washington Examiner. “The Thompsons are very happy to welcome their new son-in-law into their family.”

Thompson was one of 157 House Republicans who voted against the Respect for Marriage Act on July 19. The final vote tally was 267-157, with 47 Republicans, including Reps. Elise Stefanik (R-NY), Liz Cheney (R-WY), and Adam Kinzinger (R-IL), joining the Democrats in voting for the bill.

The bill is now being considered by the Senate, where 10 Republicans must join all 50 Democrats to send the legislation to President Joe Biden. Republican senators who have voiced their support for the bill include Sens. Ron Johnson (R-WI), Thom Tillis (R-NC), Susan Collins (R-ME), Rob Portman (R-OH), and Lisa Murkowski (R-AK).

Liberals fear the Supreme Court decision finding there is a constitutional right to same-sex marriage may soon be subject to review by a more heavily conservative court. On June 24, the Supreme Court voted to overturn Roe v. Wade. In a concurring opinion, Justice Clarence Thomas argued the court should “correct the error” of rulings that protect same-sex marriage and contraception access.
