Rep. Steve Stivers, R-Ohio, won the fight to take over as chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, topping Rep. Roger Williams, R-Texas, for the post on Tuesday afternoon.
On a 143-96 vote, Stivers topped Williams during Tuesday’s House GOP leadership vote, which also saw House Speaker Paul Ryan, Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, Whip Steve Scalise, and House Leadership Conference Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers nominated unanimously to their posts by a voice vote.
The Ohio Republican will take over for Rep. Greg Walden, R-Ore., who oversaw the House GOP’s pickups in 2014 and the party’s minimal losses in last Tuesday’s election.
Stivers was the favorite for the post heading into Tuesday, having served as Walden’s deputy and as chairman of the NRCC’s Patriot Program, which helped 20 vulnerable GOP members keep their seats last week.
Williams made a late bid for the post, running on a promise to cap NRCC member dues at $200,000. However, some members were not on board with this proposal and argued that taking money out of the committee is not the right move.
