Hundreds gather to pay respects to ‘wonderful and incredible’ David Dorn after he was shot and killed during looting

Hundreds of people came out to pay respects to the retired police captain who was killed during riots in St. Louis last week.

David Dorn, 77, was shot and killed last week when looters reportedly broke into a pawnshop during protests following George Floyd’s death. He had spent more than three decades with the St. Louis Police Department before becoming the police chief in Moline Acres for five years.

A long line of people were seen waiting to pay their respects to Dorn during a visitation held on Tuesday, and people in line heaped praise on Dorn to local media.

“I broke out in tears immediately because I couldn’t believe that something that devastating and horrible could happen to such a wonderful and incredible human being,” Dorn’s friend, Helen Martin, said, according KMOV4.

Another attendee, whose son was Dorn’s son-in-law, described him as a selfless person.

“He is such a wonderful, caring person. He wanted to do anything for everybody,” Emma Washington said. “If we needed anything done, he would do it. He would come and help us.”

Dorn was found shot on the sidewalk outside a pawnshop owned by his friend. He went there to investigate an alarm system going off while violence spread during protests in the city on June 2 in the wake of Floyd’s death.

“[Dorn] was murdered by looters at a pawn shop. He was the type of brother that would’ve given his life to save them if he had to,” the Ethical Society of Police of St. Louis wrote. “Violence is not the answer, whether it’s a citizen or officer.”

A 24-year-old suspect, Stephan Cannon, has been arrested and charged with first-degree murder, as well as other charges, including robbery and felon in possession of a firearm. No bond is allowed, according to the St. Louis Circuit Attorney’s Office.

A private funeral was held Wednesday for his family, friends, and police personnel.
